Description
Chukar Partridge are originally from Asia. They are used for hunting and dog training. The game enthusiasts also enjoy eating them. Nicknamed the “devil bird” because of the chase it gives hunters, it has the speed and agility of a mountain goat. In the United States, they primarily live in the desert regions along the Rocky Mountains as well as the 6 main islands of Hawaii. Known to dust bathe daily the Chukar keeps its feathers in top condition. Primarily sticking to the ground, they will fly at high speeds when threatened. Adult males and females are almost identical except the females are slightly smaller and lack spurs. Chicks are roughly the size of a quarter after hatching. It takes 23 to 25 days for eggs to hatch, and chicks can begin to fly at 2 weeks of age. By 16 weeks they are fully mature. In raising Chukar, we highly recommend a fully enclosed enclosure or they most likely will not stick around for long. If kept in captivity they need ample space and in large flocks, we recommend using eye blinders to prevent cannibalism. All gamebirds need a higher protein starter feed, we use 28%, and the usage of red heat lamps to prevent cannibalism during growth. We also use a quail water base so that the birds do not drown for the first 2 weeks of life.
Ideally Chukar are raised only with their own kind, but they can also live with Pheasants. DO NOT RAISE WITH OTHER BIRDS.
