Description
African geese are beautiful birds that are excellent foragers and good layers with above average fertility. They are typically noisier than other goose breeds. In cooler climates, watch their knob for orange spots in the winter. This is sign of frostbite. The tissue will usually heal and return to its normal black coloring the following year. This breed originated from the wild Asian Swan Goose of China. It was introduced into Europe in the late 1700s and into the United States in the mid 1800s. How these geese from China got the name African has always been puzzling. Apparently, it was usual to apply the term “Guinea” to anything foreign and of uncertain origin. As Guinea is off the coast of Africa, it appears the African goose got its name in a similar way. Of the geese we offer African are the second meanest. All our geese make excellent “watch dogs” as they are keen at alerting you to predators as well as people. They are also all good at weeding and domestic meaning they cannot fly.
