Description
Austra Whites were developed here at Dunlap Hatchery in the early 1900s at our original location in Oregon. The goal was to develop a less flighty, milder mannered white egg layer than that of the Leghorn while maintaining high egg production. We achieved this by crossing a White Leghorn and a Black Australorp in doing so also creating one of only a few off-white egg layers. This breed is still semi-flighty and active but heavier set to give it a calmer disposition overall. They are heat hardy and cold tolerant needing a heat source in the colder months of the year. They tolerate confinement but prefer free range making them great foragers. Chicks are solid yellow with varying degrees of black spots throughout; some may not develop any black spots.
