Description
The Black Australorp is one of our most popular beginner friendly, family friendly breeds that we’ve carried since we started business. Originating in Australia from a strain of Black Orpington and then selectively bred, they were originally called “Black Australian Orpingtons”. They decided that was a mouthful and condensed the name down to what we know today as Black Australorp. They are calm, docile birds that are great at laying eggs year-round. This breed is cold hardy and heat tolerant meaning they need shade coverage in the hotter months. They can be semi-broody, but not too hard to break habit. Adults have a beautiful green iridescent sheen throughout their body in the sunlight. Chicks are mainly black with yellow underbellies.
