Description
We hatch Aviagen Nicholas turkey poults from The Valley of the Moon. Nicholas turkey poults have been produced since 1937 and are known throughout the world for their quality. They are docile, friendly, curious birds, that are all temperature weather adaptive. We offer Broad Breasted White, Bronze, and Black turkeys. We do not recommend these turkeys for pets as they have a maximum life of roughly 2 years. At that point in their life, they will start having major health issues. Due to their size, they must be artificially inseminated, they cannot reproduce naturally. Turkeys must have a higher protein food than chickens, we recommend 28%. We recommend that the turkeys are butchered around 20 weeks of age. Keep a close eye on their growth or they might not fit in your oven when the holiday season arrives. For those who would like a little bit smaller bird, the Black are usually about 10 lbs. lighter at 20 weeks of age than the Bronze.
Black turkeys originated in Mexico and were taken to England in the 16th Century where they became popular with the local farmers. The early colonists took them back to the New World to raise for food. The turkey consumed at the first Thanksgiving may actually have been one of these rather than a native wild turkey.
