Description
Also known as the Appenzeller Spitzhauben due to its origination in Appenzell, Switzerland. This breed was first discovered in the 1500s or 1600s. Closely resembling the feathers on their head, the name “Spitzhauben” comes from the German word meaning “pointed bonnet”. Considered a rare breed in the U.S. they are not officially recognized by the National Poultry Association, however renowned as Switzerland’s national bird. Carrying a smaller than average stature, this breed is known for egg laying and show purposes. This bird is cold hardy, great at foraging, but slightly flighty in nature. A great exotic addition to the flock!
